the story of the sun god motel

How could our senses ever perceive the center of infinity? What would it do to our psyche if we were suddenly ripped from our binary existence and dropped inside a fractured and ever changing landscape? In the face of such radical change, perhaps starting with something familiar. Something tangible. Only then can we begin to grapple with where we find ourselves.

A gravel walkway surrounded by flora and fauna meticulously carved into shapes as alien as they are familiar line the path. The sky is black and no stars shine to light the way. Only the illumination from a building in the distance, ushering guests forward towards its glow like a lighthouse in a sea of darkness. Growing closer with each step, the structure begins to take shape. A 19th century building, made from ornately carved stone lined with golden edges. A roundabout sits at the base of a stairway leading up to a slowly revolving door. There is no choice but to proceed onward and enter.

The revolving door opens into a cavernous space. Walls made from fine, dark woods, adorned by muted color paintings and drapes hanging loosely. Sconces line the walls. chandeliers hang from the ceiling giving off faint illumination. Are the walls shifting? Changing? The details of this space feel familiar, but never quite static. As if any attempt to fully perceive them only causes them to withdraw further.

At the center of this space is a front desk. Behind which a lone figure is seated adorned in a fine tuxedo surrounded by lit candles. Their jacket seems to pulse and change, covered in intricate shapes. Their face, a swirling mass like staring into a black hole surrounded by stars. They say nothing.

This is a Caretaker

The idea suddenly appears in your mind, but no words are spoken. They motion for you to come forward. As you approach. The Caretaker remains silent but new words start to form inside you.

“Welcome traveler. Do not be afraid. What you see is a reflection of your universe. A reflection of yourself. As unique to you as a single snowflake falling listlessly from the sky. But there is more here. Much more.”

“This is the center. Where all choices, timelines and worlds collide. We are the stewards of the center. There are many Caretakers, each one here to serve a specific purpose. We will exist, we will fulfill this mission and then return to the center. This is our duty and we will never waver.”

“But perhaps this is enough for now. You are tired and should rest. There is a room prepared for you. We hope you find what it is you are searching for.”
